Nakties muzika“Girių dvasios” and “Šalavija”. A synthesis of sutartinės and electronic music
“Girių dvasios” is the author of various electronic music projects, dub techno music creator Evaldas Azbukauskas, originally from Mažeikiai. Among the many sources of inspiration, Baltic culture also occupies an important place in his work. “Girių dvasios” has released a number of albums, in which electronic music compositions are combined with recordings of traditional music performers. According to the creator himself, some fall asleep quietly while listening to his music, others dance to dawn without running out of energy. During this special event, spectators will have the opportunity to hear live-sounding sutartinės intertwined with the sounds of electronic music of “Girių dvasios”.
The old Lithuanian polyphonic songs – sutartinės – will be performed by the group “Šalavija” from Vilnius. It is a group of four women – folklore lovers, three of whom have graduated or are still studying ethnomusicology. The founder of the group is also the creator of this project Eglė Kašėtienė. Other group members – Greta Andriuškaitė, Greta Gražulytė and Marija Garnak.
The singers are interested and strive to convey the most authentic specifics of sutartinės performance, vocal and dialectic subtleties. Avoiding large interpretations of vocal performance and seeking to give the listener the most authentic sound of old polyphonic songs, these performers show a unique approach to the connection between traditional music and contemporary music genres.
So far, this joint project has shown up in public only a few times: at the International Cultural Heritage Festival “Lauksnos” in Klaipėda (2019), in the yard of Klaipėda Ethnocultural Center (2020) and in the open creative space-gallery “Pokšt” in Utena (2020).
This year, “Šalavija” together with “Girių dvasios” are planning to release an album, which will commemorate the result of several years of friendship and joint creation.
The concert “Nakties muzika” will take place at St. Catherine's Church. Available to hear in three ways.
